The dragqueens say hello to visitors, a section dedicated to nudists and bright colors everywhere and striking outfits. These are the first things you see when you walk in the grounds of the Milkshake Dance Festival in Amsterdam.
But the festival also stands out in other ways. The organization has taken various sustainable measures, is organizing a special party for people with disabilities and put on the guest list a hundred LGBT people who have fled Syria and Iran.
Milkshake wants to be a festival where everyone feels good, says organizer Marieke Samallo. This is also why some 17,000 visitors from the Netherlands and abroad opt for the party in the Westerpark. Meat is not allowed
The slogan of the festival is: "nothing n & # 39; It is permissible, everything is allowed. Only meat is not welcome on the festival grounds this year. The seventh edition of Milkshake is completely vegetarian and therefore identical to the DGTL dance festival, which two years ago all the meat menus in the food stalls.
For entrepreneurs at the festival usually changes little. They have often offered vegetarian options. Only for Ilhan, who sells Turkish food, was looking for the right ingredients for Turkish pizza. The dough is normally chopped. "Replacing that without the vegetables falling off the pizza was still pretty difficult," he says.
He thinks it's good that festival visitors eat vegetarian more often. Juanita's hot dog stand Chez Jan agrees with him. "It's the trend, especially in big cities," she says. They also see Burgermeester burgers, but they also like to sell meat. With only vegetarian options on the menu, they sell less, say the employees. Meat was also better served by visitors. "In fact, everyone must be able to make their own choices," says dancer Jens, who performs later in the day.
