Petten's High Flux Reactor (HFR) was shut down on Thursday morning following a leak. Contaminated radioactive cooling water was found in a crawl space
Immediately after the discovery of the leak, the reactor was safely shut down. The leak was then corrected.
According to the NRG operator, there is no danger to the environment. However, the neighborhood's groundwater will be subject to close monitoring in the near future. The Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority, which oversees the safety of nuclear facilities, says additional protective measures are not necessary for local residents
. In this reactor, radioactive isotopes are used in hospitals, particularly for the fight against cancer.
Employees performing the work were checked for the presence of radioactive substances. No details have been found here.
We still do not know what caused the leak. NRG has opened an investigation. It also examines the amount of contaminated water that has passed.
