The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is native to Southeast Asia. Thanks to international transport, the mosquito has spread in large parts of the world in recent years, including in Europe. The chances that tiger mosquitoes in the Netherlands can transmit viruses of certain infectious diseases (such as dengue (dengue fever) and chikungunya) are currently negligible. The role played by the tiger mosquito in the spread of zika fever is currently unknown. This role is probably small. Zika fever is mainly transmitted in the tropics by the yellow mosquito (Aedus Aegypti).
The RIVM website advises companies where insects are detected to wear protective clothing and to use as many mosquito repellents containing Deet as possible.
