A kidnapping with military precision

It is eight o'clock in the morning when a man rings at Insiya's grandmother's house on Anfieldroad, in the Amsterdam district, at Watergraafsmeer. Mother Nadia Rashid has just brought the other girl Elvira to school. "I am a social service inspector," says the man. "Is Insya's mother at home?"

A few seconds later, two more men enter the house. " I am here on behalf of the Indian Court !" Cry this one, a gentleman, and wave a document. While he controls Grandma, the other men take Insiya with him.

Monday, case processing in the case of the kidnappers who took Insiya, two years old, on September 29, 2016 at her grandmother's home. It's a long and drastic process. Since February 2017, the prosecution is trying to hear the father and godfather of the abduction, Shehzad H .. Unsuccessful: the rich Indian businessman lives with his daughter in India since l '39; abduction and hired Gérard Spong as a lawyer. There is no extradition treaty with India and the request for legal aid in the case of kidnappers is difficult.

In court, only two of the six suspects are present, Willem V. and Daniël C. The lawyers for the other suspects said that their clients had decided not to appear in front of the media's attention. All lawyers also point out that the interrogation of Shehzad H. is indispensable to the continuation of the trial.

For a time, it seems that the case is suspended, but the court decides to send back only a part – to May 2019. In addition. a "personal appearance warrant" issued to suspects who are not present today. It lasted long enough.

Back to the events of September 29, 2016. At home on Anfieldroad, a fight breaks out between grandmother, an aunt, a nephew and Daniel C. Buren – some still in pajamas – come to their rescue. When the police arrive a few minutes later, C. is on the ground and bleeding. There is no record of Insiya and the other two kidnappers.

The man who rang, Willem V. Kalm, explains to V. at the meeting how he had engaged, as an entrepreneur – in the railway's measuring equipment – in the case. His company needed money. "I took everything at that time," he says. Thus, when his partner, Erik S., asked him to phone a father whose daughter was wrongfully kidnapped from India, he considered it a "good opportunity ".

But finally, V. writes an extremely detailed plan for the kidnapping of this two-year-old child. In a document titled "Operation Barney", found by the police on a computer, military precision describes how the kidnapping should be done. There were five phases, code names based on Disney figures, an observation and a pickup team, which V. would take with you. "To bind the thumbs of the grandmother, she was not allowed to cooperate."

V. and Imran S., the nephew of the father of Insya, lead Insiya to the White Mountains restaurant in Eemnes, where they made arrangements with Shehzad H. and Daniël C. The latter leads with H. and S. further to the "safe haven". , the house of Erik S. in Germany. From there, they manage to organize a flight to India.

After the transfer to Witte Bergen, Willem V. hands over his rental car and goes to work. That night, he sees an article on the news kidnapping. It's a turning point, he says in the courtroom. "I have a cauliflower in the stomach."

According to V., Shehzad H. had convinced her that Nadia's mother had just kidnapped Insiya, while the Indian government had given her authority. He thought he was doing something good, he said. No, he did not do it for the 40,000 euros that he would receive with Erik S. for their cooperation. "It's the emotional argument that weighed the heaviest." He handed a deposit to the police when he reported the day after the kidnapping – it was "contaminated money".

American Daniël C. is less talkative. Although the questioned man would have said that he wanted to make "a million apologies," Monday is still his answer: "no comment, your honor ".

At the end of the session, C. went to his mother Nadia in the hallway. "I'm sorry for your daughter, ma'am," he said in English. His nephew jumps quickly. "Go in! You kidnapped my niece!"

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the court continues the substantive treatment. It is not known if the other suspects are present.
