Alderman Jan Zwiers from the municipality of Coevorden was ill-treated Wednesday morning during a visit to a caravan camp in the village of Steenwijksmoer. This confirms the police of the north of the Netherlands against NRC after a message on RTV Drenthe.

Alderman arrived at the caravan camp for an interview with an interest group from Drenth Village. A resident did not like that and beat the alderman.

Blue Eyes

Zwiers left with a black eye, a broken nose, a scratched knee, broken glasses and torn pants. He has tabled a report. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of ill-treatment. Police opened investigation and collected witness statements

Coevorden Mayor Bert Bouwmeester said he was shocked and rejected the abuse. "At Coevorden, we opt for a governance style in which we go out a lot and talk as many residents as possible. It may not be that you are facing this type of aggression and limited in your way of managing," he told RTV Drenthe. Zwiers continues his management style despite the attack: "I want to be accessible to all, this incident does not change that," he says.
