ChristenUnie party leader wants Senator Mirjam Bikker to become the leader of the ChristenUnie party in the senatorial elections. If members approve of her candidacy for the party convention at the end of November, Bikker will be the first woman leader of the ChristenUnie party in national politics.

Bikker, 36, has been in the Senate since 2015. She was Chair of the City Council of Utrecht City Council and Policy Officer for the Parliamentary Group.

Against the Reformatorisch Dagblad, Bikker claims that it is a privilege to be named. "The appreciation and confidence that comes with it are special and we are grateful for it," the paper says.

Three or Four Seats

Bikker wants the three current seats that ChristenUnie has kept in the Senate. "But in view of the polls, there can also be a fourth," she told Nederlands Dagblad.

Senate elections at the end of May next year may have important consequences for the government as the coalition threatens to lose the Senate. By the way, Bikker is not the only new leader of the coalition: the CDA and D66 also have a new leader in the Senate.
