The elderly are often next to their bed at dawn of the day. Do they really need less sleep?
The simple answer is: no. The amount of sleep you need is set around your twentieth year and does not change after that. Your body and brain can get used to sleeping less. If you sleep only six hours a night for a long time, you will not know better at all times and you will feel rested. But in the long run it's unhealthy. This leads to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and memory loss.
It is not that people over 65 need less sleep, but that they sleep less well. Older people sleep lighter and wake up more often at night. Their pace also changes a little: they are tired earlier in the evening. This is probably due to reduced production of growth hormone and sleep hormone melatonin. It is not for nothing that sleep problems are most common in people over 65 years of age.
