LONDON (Reuters) – Every minute, two children die of pneumonia somewhere in the world. The disease is the most lethal disease in children under five and requires more lives than malaria, diarrhea and measles combined. If pneumonia is not better controlled, it will save 11 million children by 2030.
This is demonstrated by a new study of Safe the Children and the University American John Hopkins, to be presented Monday, World Pneumonia Day. Pneumonia is easy to prevent and treat. According to the study, most children die due to a lack of vaccination, incorrect diagnoses, a shortage of antibiotics and poor guidance. Most of the victims are in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa
Pim Kraan, director of Save the Children Netherlands, describes the disease as "a forgotten killer." According to him, cheap antibiotics and good food can save up to 4 million children by 2030.
