The Samenwerkende Gezondheidsfondsen (SGF), which includes KWF Kankerbestrijding and RumaNederland, as well as Topsector Life Sciences & Health and the corporate sector, are donating 15 million euros for promising immunological research. Never before has the Netherlands collaborated so closely with cross-diseases in immune system research, which was to further unravel the functioning of the human immune system.
The purpose of the research is to better understand and combat various diseases in which the immune system is disrupted, such as cancer, rheumatism and MS. In the case of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatism and diabetes, for example, the immune system reacts too strongly and, in the case of cancer, is inadequate. Despite tremendous progress in treating these disorders, it is far from a cure for all patients.
"Through our research, we can really make a difference for the next generation," says Taco Kuijpers of the UMC of Amsterdam, project leader for one of the studies. "Patients are now dying of the disease, or the consequences of it, of the side effects of therapy or of a chronic illness where they depend on heavy drugs, which has a huge impact on the way people can organize their life.
Sustainable Cooperation
An important criterion in the allocation of research funding was the long-term cooperation between research institutions, companies and health funds. "We have now brought together the Dutch immunology summit, which will work on this important mission: together, we can achieve better results faster and offer patients suffering from these inconveniences a more promising future," says Emiel Rolink, Director Joint Health Funds.
