The NatureToday site reports that the Netherlands has reported more than 28 million sightings to this database. This makes it one of the countries that have contributed the most to GBIF.
The GBIF database maps the diversity of animal and plant species on our planet. This is important for the development and protection of nature and the environment.
GBIF has connected hundreds of public and private organizations around the world. The information collected is available to all, so that scientists and conservationists, as well as citizens, can work to keep our planet healthy.
The millions of observations of our country are coordinated by the NLBIF Foundation. These come from institutes such as Wageningen Environmental Research and the NIOZ, from universities and (semi-) governmental organizations such as STOWA, RIVM and Rijkswaterstaat. Private organizations such as Sportvisserij Nederland and RAVON also contribute.
GBIF users downloaded 845 billion observations worldwide in 2017. This represents an increase of 200% over 2016.
