For the study, a distinction was made between three types of overweight: class 1 (BMI 30 to 35), class 2 (BMI 35 to 40) and class 3 (BMI 40). or more). Class 3 talks about morbid obesity

The BMI is the body mass index. That's the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the length in meters. An adult is overweight with a BMI of 25 or higher.

In total, 50 per cent of the over-20s in the Netherlands are overweight. In the early 1980s, this was still the case at 33%. Half of this increase fell into the category of obesity.

Growth

Of the three classes of overweight, the first class occurs most frequently. Since the early 1980s, the proportion of overweight people in this category has also increased the fastest. The percentage went from 4 to 11%.

The number of overweight cases in grades 2 and 3 (obesity and morbid obesity) also increased. These cases were rare in the early 1980s

Women are more likely to suffer from obesity than men. This is also the case in the three distinct overweight classes. Obesity is most prevalent among the 65 to 75 age group. A fifth of Dutch people of this age are obese.
