78% were victims of sexual violence and 60% reported physical abuse, ranging from hair loss to severe violence. 58% reported experiencing financial and economic abuse, ranging from customers who stole or did not pay until they were refused to the bank or insurance because of work.

A small portion states

Only 20% are reported to the police. The rest did not do so for fear of discrimination, lawsuits, violation of privacy and housing removal.

Since the lifting of the ban on brothels in 2000, prostitution is legal but subject to licensing. Sex workers who work outside the licensed circuit are significantly more at risk of violence. Massage parlors and hotel rooms are the safest. Working in a private house or behind the window is safer.

"The threshold must be reduced"

Research shows that Dutch legislation and sex work policy are not intended to protect assets for their safety. The only way to reduce violence is to lower the threshold for declaring and recognizing the labor rights of sex workers as a professional group, say the researchers.
