Despite the fact that the animals were vaccinated, this was not enough to prevent the outbreak of the disease on the farm. Nevertheless, properly executed vaccination and good biosecurity remain a priority to prevent the spread of the virus.

More than 10% mortality

The animals on this farm – ponds, young laying hens that have not yet laid – showed clinical signs and more than 10% died. From the study on animals killed at DGZ, the following elements were established: the animals exhibited nervous symptoms, spot bleeds were found and the animal trachea was severely inflamed. There was also subtle bleeding in the transition from gland to gizzard. There was a green-gallous content in the stomach and intestines. The kidneys were arranged, as were the blood vessels of the meninges.

The way in which the virus has been found in this classic commercial venture without outside study is not yet clear and is still under investigation. Around this company, the same measures take effect around the epidemic in Haaltert, also in East Flanders:

In the 3 km and 10 km zones is a ban on the power to move all poultry and hatching eggs. All professional poultry farmers in these areas must deliver an inventory of the business to the Food Agency. In these areas, all poultry and bird collections are prohibited.

In the area of ​​500 m around the contamination, all poultry, both hobby and professional farms, must also be slaughtered and vaccinated. In this area, each hobby holder must also provide an inventory of their poultry to the municipality.

Area slaughterhouses and hatcheries can also immediately use the corridors provided for in the sectoral scenario.

The problems surrounding noncommunicable diseases are clearly not irrelevant. This means that all efforts regarding correct vaccination and good biosecurity are extremely important to ensure that the virus does not spread further.
