Researchers in Amsterdam have developed a new treatment allowing type 2 diabetic patients to no longer have to inject insulin. This yields AD .
In type 2 diabetes, the body no longer responds well to insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. This leaves too much sugar in your blood. This initially dissolves the body by making an extra insulin, but this is done less and less over time. Therefore, patients must inject insulin
In the new treatment, a balloon is inserted into the small intestine, which is filled with hot water. Due to the heat, the mucous membrane is consumed. The new mucous membrane improves blood sugar levels, which prevents patients from injecting insulin.
According to AD Amsterdam scientists were Tuesday in a "cautious jubilation" at a congress in Vienna. "This treatment can delay or even prevent the use of insulin, which is promising," says Jacques Bergman, professor and gastroenterologist, liver specialist physician at the UMC in Amsterdam.
Of the fifty patients studied, 90 percent of the disease one year after stable balloon treatment. They were still taking medications daily, but they were less likely to have side effects due to lower blood sugar.
A new international study on a hundred patients has yet to confirm this result.
At present, one million Dutch people have type 2 diabetes, of which 700,000 are not yet injecting insulin.
