News: Cancer was the most common cause of death in Amstelveen

In 2017, more than 150,000 inhabitants of the Netherlands died. With 47,000 deaths (31%), cancer was the most common cause of death. About 25% died of cardiovascular disease. Especially the elderly are dying of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Among young people (15 to 30 years old), an unnatural death with 53% was the most common cause of death. This is evident from the new figures from Statistics Netherlands (1965)

Cause of death in 2017

Causes of death vary greatly depending on the group of 39; age. 62% of children who died less than one year died in 2017 from a perinatal period, such as infections and lung problems. Children (1 to 15 years old) died mainly from cancer or a non-natural cause. In both cases, it was just over 20% of deaths.

People aged 15 to 30 years died much more often than young children from an unnatural death (such as a suicide, an accident). That's 53 percent of the people who died in this group. Cancer is most often the cause of death in the 30 to 80 age group. Cardiac and vascular diseases are also common in this group as causes of death. In people aged 80 years and older, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death at 30 percent.

Causes of death by sex in 2017

More men than women die of cancer. Men die more than women of cancer. In 2017, cancer was the cause of men in 35% of deaths, women 27%. Psychological and behavioral disorders (especially dementia) are the cause of death more often in women than in men. In 2017, it was respectively 11% and 6% of total mortality. In the case of other causes of death, the differences between men and women are smaller.
