One in three Dutch municipalities suffers from criminal benefactors. For example, they sponsor sports clubs, use foundations as a façade for criminal activities and organize charity events. That's what shows a study from the Tilburg University and the Bruinsma Bureau, published Tuesday.

Researchers relied on information from municipalities and Regional Information and Expertise Centers (RIECs), where information comes from the public administration, tax authorities, the police and the public prosecutor. Criminal benefactors are active in 60 of the 167 municipalities surveyed.

According to researchers, the activities of benefactors – often drug criminals, motorized gang members and white-collar criminals – legitimize undesirable social behavior and have a primitive effect on young people. often the purpose of good works.

Criminals sometimes use their positive actions strategically, the researchers write. Biker gang members consciously try to cultivate an image of "warm brotherhood of big guys with big hearts". The research points, among other things, to the Gryingen branch of the Satudarah engine group, which organizes charity nights every year. (NRC)
