Since April 2018, 14 cases of Newcastle disease have been detected in recreational poultry. The chickens then become very sick and die. The virus is transmitted very easily and that is why the Federal Food Agency (FAVV) has banned the sale, distribution and exposure of poultry since July 2. As a poultry producer, you can take steps to protect your chickens.
The virus can affect all species of birds, but one species of bird is more sensitive than the other. An infection with the virus makes the birds very sick (nervous symptoms, drowsiness, eating less, digestive disorders and respiratory problems) and even causes considerable mortality.
Newcastle virus is completely harmless to humans. The consumption of eggs, chicken meat and chicken products therefore presents no risk.
How to protect your chickens?
It is important to protect the chickens against disease. For this reason, please take the following measures into account:
– Avoid contact with other chickens
– Avoid contact with wild birds: The disease is spreading throughout the country. The virus is transmitted in direct contact with infected birds, via contaminated food and drinking water. That is why it is wise to ensure that wild birds can not reach the food and water of your chickens. It is advisable to place drinking water and chicken feed under a roof and possibly hang it just above your attic.
– Currently, the purchase, exchange and the exhibition of poultry are prohibited. This measure must ensure that no infected fowl is introduced into your hen house. Set the purchase of new animals
-Don't leave other poultry farmers in your hen house.
-Vaccinate your fowl: You can vaccinate against Newcastle disease. Prevention is better than cure. Please contact a veterinarian for this.
Newcastle disease is a disease that requires control. When the disease is diagnosed, steps are taken by the FASFC to prevent spread.
