Rotary Club Contribution Barendrecht
Barendrecht – Polio (polio), also known as infantile paralysis, is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the spinal cord. The disease has been, thanks to Rotary's international network that has provided practical help and financial resources, and has almost entirely disappeared from the world in collaboration with WHO. Since 1988, the number of polio incidents has decreased by 99%. But in recent years, especially in conflict areas, the number of cases of disease has increased.
Rotary is now strong for a final offensive. This requires money. In the Netherlands, Rotary collects this in its own way: with the sale of tulip bulbs, the special "End Polio Now tulips". The Rotary club Barendrecht is also very much involved in this promotion.
Tulip bulbs
For only 15 euros each, you can order one or more boxes of tulip bulbs (25 pieces), the product of which returns entirely to the control of polio! And thanks to other Rotary funds and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this amount has finally even tripled!

Insidious disease
Poliomyelitis is an insidious disease that in 95% of cases shows no symptoms but spreads. The virus is passed on to other people, especially because of poor hygiene.
Muscular paralysis
Muscular paralysis affects a small proportion of those infected. This is particularly the case of polio virus type 1. As soon as the disease enters the chronic phase, paralysis becomes incurable with permanent muscle weakness. Growing children also develop deformities as affected limbs can no longer develop normally or are muscled by functioning muscles.
When the respiratory muscles become paralyzed, polio causes death. Polio can be prevented by preventive vaccination and good hygiene. We are so close to eradicating polio forever. Help yourself
