A number of drugs containing the active substance valsartan are withdrawn from the market. The drug is contaminated with the substance N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which is probably carcinogenic. The substance ended up in the drugs during the production process in China, reports the Health and Youth Inspectorate.

The recall is valid for the whole of Europe. According to the inspection, it is only drugs containing valsartan manufactured in a factory in China. These medications are prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure, the treatment of patients who have recently had a heart attack and the treatment of heart failure.

The likelihood that the patient gets cancer by using the contaminated drug is weak first European analysis. According to the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), the chance is comparable to the extra risk of cancer due to the regular diet of roast meat.

Medicines are recalled as a precaution in pharmacists.

with their pharmacy or doctor. They can take another medicine at the pharmacy. "It is explicitly not the intention that patients stop using the drug without consulting their doctor," says the Inspectorate. Doctors should first check if the medication that the patient is using is actually one of the ways listed using a list on the inspection site. Patients should not stop using the drug acutely but can change responsibly for a different valsartan, informing the inspection.
