Oosterhout asks passers-by to bring back the dead animals or report them to the Brabantse Delta water service so that they can be cleaned. Touching these animals is not recommended in connection with infection by botulism bacteria.

The municipality placed warning signs near the water concerned. Delta Brabant will regularly check the water. The municipality removes the signs when the risk of infection is passed.

Botulism bacteria become active because of long-term heat. The bacterium is found mainly in shallow waters without aquatic plants. The presence of botulism can be noticed by sick or dead birds and fish in the water.

Effects

Symptoms of botulism begin, among other things, with nausea, dizziness and a feeling of weakness. This can be followed by poor vision, difficulty speaking and possibly paralysis of muscles. This paralysis can cause respiratory problems.

These symptoms do not always have to occur, many forms of the disease are not harmful to people. In addition, the chances of having botulism as a person are very low, says the RIVM.
