African swine fever
African swine fever is approaching the German border and it has recently appeared that it can cross great distances. As a result, experts estimate that the risk of African swine fever is high. Various legislative proposals to combat the animal disease, including a ban on harvest, have been received positively.
The threat from Eastern Europe increases because (after outbreaks in Poland) new infections have also occurred in Romania and Hungary. It was not just wild boar, but also "tame" pigs. As a result, several German experts indicate that the risk of occurrence of animal diseases increases.
Fear of Introduction
Recent outbreaks show that the disease can bridge great distances. This makes the fear of the introduction of African swine fever more and more real. Pig farmers are therefore worried about the herd of sows and possible damage in the event of an outbreak.
To meet farmers, the government is working on measures. For example, legislative proposals were submitted in early June for more powers in the event of an outbreak, including a harvest ban. The Federal Council in Germany welcomed the proposals, which took place on Friday 6 July.
However, it is pointed out that these measures entail considerable financial burdens for the Länder. In order to take preventive measures and to have crisis management, more money has been requested. Something that has been well received by the German pig breeders' union.
The compensation is not the case
What has been withdrawn are compensation in the event of a harvest ban. In addition, a new measure is mentioned; the use of hunting dogs in the use of motorized vehicles.
The Federal Council's comments are now being processed as quickly as possible, after which the government can move on to the next stage of the implementation of the measures.
