The sensitivity of a father to his baby depends on the levels of cortisol in his body. A man with high cortisol values is less sensitive to his child than a man with lower values. Researchers from the University of Utrecht and Radboud University concluded after studying 57 future fathers and 88 pregnant women. During the study, they had a doll that was crying and which they had to look after. This yields NU.nl.
During the mission, researchers continuously monitored the levels of cortisol and testosterone. Cortisol is a stress hormone. Also after the birth of their child, fathers had to return with their newborn to have their hormonal values measured. This moment of measurement took place during the change of the layer.
The researchers noticed that they could use this study to predict the sensitivity of a father who is pregnant with his baby. Because it turned out that fathers with high values of cortisol while taking care of the doll, were less sensitive with their own child. Incidentally, no link has been found between high hormone levels in women and the sensitivity with which they treat their newborns.
