The Strontweek in Friesland is now inscribed on the list of the intangible heritage of the Netherlands. This week-end, other Frisian traditions have also been added to the list: the Grouster St. Piter festival and the fierljeppen are mentioned.
De Strontweek is made up of four events related to wind and water. There is a Strontrace (a route that goes through the IJsselmeer and from Amsterdam to Warmond), the Beurtveer (sailing race), the Fishing Days and the Liereliet music festival. With Strontrace, skippers can only use one map and one compass. The winners will receive the Zilveren Brijlepel
This event was held for the first time in 1974, inspired by the transport of Fries manure in the bulbous region. Nowadays, fertilizers are delivered in exchange for flower bulbs that must be transported to Workum. The use of engines is prohibited during racing: if there is no wind, the boat must be advanced by the work force, by the trees or by the hunt.
The municipalities of Súdwest-Fryslân and Teylingen supported the idea of the Stront week, reports Omrop Fryslân. Traditions can only be on the list if there is government support.
