Coffee is for many the ideal kickstart of the morning. Later in the day, it can give you a little extra energy. It's the caffeine that makes us alert and strong. At least for a part. For another part, to believe that it helps is enough.
A new study shows that the smell of coffee makes us more alert. Just feeling caffeine naturally does not end up in your bloodstream. This suggests a placebo effect.
American researchers asked 100 students to ask 10 mathematics questions. Half did the test in a room that smelled like coffee, the other half did the test in an odorless room. The students who had the smell of coffee improved the test considerably, as it can be read in The Journal of Environmental Psychology .
The scientists then asked 200 other people to smell different smells. and describe what they did to them. Participants indicated that the smell of coffee made them more energetic and more alert than, for example, the smell of flowers.
