RENO, Nevada (KOLO) – Nevadans aged 55 and older with underlying health conditions are now eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine at local pharmacies.
The announcement was made during Monday’s COVID press appeal.
James English of the Washoe County Health District said medical providers will start vaccinating this particular group later this week or early next week.
Also announced on Monday, the WCHD said it was scheduled to receive more than 16,000 doses of the vaccine on Tuesday, March 16. This is a significant increase from the regular allocation of approximately 9,000 doses per week.
Washoe County is alerting people 65 and older who were waiting for an appointment for a vaccine, to check their email accounts, spam folder and junk folder for an invitation.
The shipment will also allow the county to expand immunization availability to more job groups.
“Because in northern Nevada here you see we have a large population of warehouses and job groups, whereas in other parts of the state we don’t,” said English . “And with that, we hope to get to the point where we can start working with our hotel and restaurant groups. But everything still depends on the vaccine supply. “
English says the bulk of the vaccine shipment this week is the Pfizer vaccine. WCHD receives smaller shipment of Moderna vaccine. The health district is still receiving part of the Johnson & Johnson Janssen vaccine, which will be distributed on Sunday.
