A new resource is available for charities, nonprofits, and anyone else who needs help with fundraising.

Patrick Belcher’s book “Fundraising Is: Everything Done Before Asking For Money” was released on August 31 to help nonprofits and charities navigate fundraising. funds proactively rather than reactively.

The book has been in the works for years, as Belcher has learned from his experiences and posted them on his blog at pbjmarcomm.net. He started these blog posts during his tenure as Executive Director of the Red Cross, where he used his 20 years of sales experience to exceed the association’s fundraising goals.

“I started writing these blogs about what I saw working with clients during my time with the Red Cross,” Belcher said. “This is a more eloquent version of all my blog posts. “

Belcher is currently Chairman of the Suffolk Education Foundation, organizing fundraisers for the benefit of students, teachers and staff at Suffolk Public Schools.

Fundraising can be a dreaded part of business. According to Belcher, due to stress and long working hours, most fundraising professionals only stay in their post for two years before leaving. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

“If it’s done right, asking for the money is the easiest part,” Belcher said.

Belcher compares nonprofits to small businesses. Both need to understand their flow of money to complete their mission, whether it’s selling a product or solving a problem in the community. The more money a small business earns, the more it can grow and accomplish, which is the same with nonprofits.

“Some nonprofits are self-funded, and they really don’t have to be,” Belcher said. “They just need to feel comfortable telling their story.”

The book not only offers resources for fundraising, but also provides help with team building, event management, and storytelling. The chapters end with a ‘toolbox’ that highlights the key points readers need to communicate to their teams.
