The new COVID-19 strain that has ravaged the UK has emerged in San Diego County, California, Governor Gavin Newsom said on Wednesday.

Newsom announced the arrival of the mutation in his condition during a live conversation with federal infectious disease expert Dr.Anthony Fauci, a day after the strain was detected in Colorado in the first known case on the American soil.

“This new strain that we have identified … has been identified here in the state of California, in Southern California,” Newsom said, in a video posted by local outlet KRON4.

Newsom did not immediately provide more details of the case, including the patient’s condition or the exact location, but San Diego County officials later confirmed the case was detected there.

The patient, a man in his 30s who is not hospitalized, had no travel history prior to his diagnosis, which suggests he picked up the strain locally, County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said, according to the local KPBS point of sale.

“Because there is no travel history, we believe this is not an isolated case in San Diego and there are other cases of the same strain in San Diego,” Fletcher said. .

On the previous call, Fauci told Newsom he was hardly surprised the transfer made it to California – and warned the Golden State would not be the last to find her.

“I’m not surprised that you have one case – and probably more – in California,” he said. “We will probably see reports from other states.

“I think you’re going to start to see it because if you have such importance in the UK with all the travel … I don’t think Californians should feel it’s anything strange,” he said. continued Fauci. “It is something that is expected.”

According to data from Johns Hopkins University as of Wednesday afternoon, Los Angeles County has seen more confirmed cases of the coronavirus than any other county in the United States, with 746,089 diagnoses.

San Diego County has 150,064 confirmed cases.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned that the new variant of the coronavirus could be 70% more transmissible than the previous strain.
