MADISON, Wisconsin — The University of Wisconsin system and the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) have signed a landmark agreement that allows students to more easily transfer up to 72 credits between the two higher education systems.
The agreement, which entered into force on September 1, meets a legal requirement that the two systems identify at least 72 credits of basic general education courses to be transferred by the 2022-2023 academic year.
“This student-centric agreement will improve the quality of higher education in Wisconsin and is a victory for students and our two systems,” said Tommy Thompson, president of UW System. “There are a lot of things we can accomplish when we work together. “
The agreement highlights the collaboration between the UW system and the WTCS, Thompson said, including previous transfer agreements that paved the way for up to 30 transfer credits. He stressed that this was a thorough analysis by professors and academic experts in both systems to identify suitable courses for transfer.
“The commitment of our faculty and staff to the students of Wisconsin is incredible,” said Thompson. “The agreement is accessible to students and will save them time and money. This increases the consistency of credit transfer between the UW System and WTCS campuses. “
The UW system will make transfer details available on its transferology webpage, allowing students to explore the course equivalencies and credits that will be transferred. The agreement means that a student can take courses at a technical college and have the potential to enter a university in the UW system at a junior level. The agreement also increases credit portability, allowing a UW student to transfer credits to WTCS in a process known as “reverse transfer.”
The deal will be reviewed in 2023, when additional courses from both systems could be added.
The UW System and WTCS have a long history of collaboration, including shared faculty development which includes inviting WTCS instructors to UW System conferences and webinars; ongoing review of associate’s degrees at WTCS; creation of an inter-system transfer steering committee; and twice-yearly counseling, admissions and transfer meetings.
The University of Wisconsin system serves approximately 165,000 students. Awarding nearly 37,000 degrees annually, the UW system is Wisconsin’s talent pool, empowering graduates to increase their income, contribute to their communities, and make Wisconsin a better place to live. Almost 90 percent of the state’s UW system graduates stay in Wisconsin five years after graduating. The UW system offers a state return on investment of 23: 1. The institutions of the UW system also contribute to the rich culture and economy of Wisconsin with ground-breaking research, new ventures and patents, and unlimited creative intellectual energy.
