AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) – We are learning more about what the initial deployment of the coronavirus vaccine will look like in Maine.
At the Maine CDC briefing on Monday, Dr Nirav Shah said preliminary data shows that, once approved, the state would receive 12,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine.
This is the one that requires extreme cold storage.
These doses are enough to vaccinate 6,000 people.
We are told that the first to receive the vaccines would be health care workers and frontline workers.
“Right now, our goal is to make sure that we can deliver this Pfizer vaccine to healthcare facilities that have ultra-cold storage units in place so they can begin to organize to deliver the vaccine.” , Shah explained. “We’ve worked with these institutions to make sure they plan to run it, but once we get the message, they’ll need to put those plans into action.”
The Maine CDC would also take some of the initial shipment to its lab and hand them over to healthcare workers in hospitals without a cold room.
Shah said the amount of Moderna vaccine Maine will initially receive is still not known.
It does not require extreme cold storage.
Also, it remains to be seen how often the follow-up shipments from the two will arrive.
