SALT LAKE CITY – Scientists have discovered a new dinosaur the size of a wallaby.

  • A group of researchers recently discovered the new Galleonosaurus dorisae, or Galleonosaurus, according to a study published in the Journal of Paleontology. And apparently, the dinosaur – which existed 125 million years ago in the Victoria region of Australia – was walking on its hind legs during the Cretaceous period.
  • Sounds familiar? It should. Galleonosaurus was similar to the modern wallaby.
  • "These little dinosaurs would have been agile runners on their powerful hind legs," said Dr. Matthew Herne, a vertebrate palaeontologist from the New England University in Armidale, New South Wales.
  • The Galleonosaurus, which takes its name from its jawbone that looked like a galleon, was a smaller ornithopod (the most successful herbivore at the time of the dinosaurs), reported BBC News.

Researchers of the Dinosaur Dreaming project, which comes out of Monash University and the Victory Museum, has discovered the dinosaur, which would have been smaller than the most common.

Comment this story

  • "It's a lost world." None of this is now available or obvious with the exception of fossils, and the only place we can actually access these fossils lies along the south coast of Victoria, "he said.
  • Herne said several species were small and had bird-like hips living along rivers and lakes in the area.
  • "It seems that Galleonosaurus is probably closely related to maybe four or five other species that look a bit similar and have a similar size," Herne said. "But we can say that they are different by the anatomy of the jaw and teeth."
