New hunting regulations after chronic wasting disease discovered in Montgomery County

For the first time this year, new hunting regulations were put in place after the discovery of chronic wasting disease in Montgomery County.

In November, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources discovered that a deer had tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

For this reason, the general gun season has now moved to four weeks in Montgomery and Pulaski counties.

Voluntary CWD testing sites will be available throughout the hunting season which begins September 4.

“A variety of MDC testing sites have been set up,” said Megan Kirchgessner, Virginia DWR veterinarian. “The hunter just needs to follow the instructions on the website and on these test sites. And we will have these deer tested for free and return them to the hunters. “
