Having previously reported details on the upcoming updates to the iPad Pro and the 9th generation iPad that we expect this year, Macotakara released today with a new supply chain report focused on the iPad mini. The report says the 6th generation iPad mini will feature an 8.4-inch display with smaller bezels.

New features of the iPad mini

Unfortunately, the iPad mini will not feature a similar design overhaul as the iPad Air 4 and iPad Pro. Instead, it will keep the frames at the top and bottom with a home button and Touch ID, plus Lightning connectivity at the bottom. The report says:

It’s a narrow frame like the iPad Air (3rd gen), and the design goes with the iPad (9th gen), which continues to use Touch ID and the Lightning port.

Macotakara says the updated iPad mini will be released in March. This is in line with an expected update to the iPad Pro that we are also expecting during the first quarter of this year.

Last May, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo announced that Apple would release an iPad mini between 8.5 inches and 9 inches in the first half of 2021. At the time, Kuo did not provide any Detail on the refreshed iPad mini design, instead the selling points would be “affordability and adoption of fast chips.”

Further details on the iPad mini update are unknown, but the screen size is interesting. Apple currently sells the iPad mini with a 7.9-inch screen. It looks like Apple will slightly reduce the bezel sizes of the iPad mini in order to accommodate the larger 8.4-inch screen while keeping the home button at the bottom.

Apple last updated the iPad mini in 2019, bringing a faster A12 Bionic processor and other improvements.
