Bianca Smith recently became the first black woman to land a professional coaching job when she was hired by the Boston Red Sox. Smith will be based in Fort Myers, Fla., And will coach players at the team’s development complex. Although this is a big deal, she has bigger aspirations.
In an interview with MLB.com, Smith, 29, said she would love to be a Major League Baseball manager one day.
“Don’t limit me. I want to go as high as possible,” Smith said. “I want to keep challenging myself, and for now, yes, he’s the manager of MLB. I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Obviously I changed my idea of being a CEO, but as much as I love coaching, I want to be in this position [of manager]. I want to learn as much as possible and get into this role. “
The past year has been a huge one for women in the game of baseball. Kim Ng became the first woman in professional sports to become general manager after being hired as the new general manager of the Miami Marlins. Smith said that Ng’s hiring “was so important” to her.
“I was so excited,” Smith said. “I’ve been following her career for years. It was about time. She was so tall to me, my parents knew her name because I talked about her all the time. It was a huge moment for me. I was so excited. to do it. see this. Like I said, I thought it was about time. She should have been hired [as a GM] years ago, if not decades. “
Weeks later, Smith made his own story and will be looking to start his coaching career this year. But while she’s very proud of what she’s accomplished so far, Smith isn’t limiting herself in any way.
“I don’t want to put any limits on him. If someone is inspired by this story, even better. I guess my biggest thing I would like to say is to continue following your dreams,” Smith said. “It’s hard work, but it’s worth it. Not everything that is easy is not really fun.
