A New Jersey police officer grabbed a one-month-old baby after a man threw the child from a building’s second-story balcony, authorities said on Saturday.

The newborn, who has not been identified, was not physically injured, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said.

In an Instagram post, Fulop thanked the officer, Eduardo Matute, and posted a photo of him holding the baby.

The incident began Saturday morning in Jersey City, with a report of an unidentified man “hanging” the newborn baby on a balcony, a Jersey City spokesperson told NJ Advance Media.

Officers negotiated with the man and set up a perimeter, Fulop said. The man was arrested after throwing the baby out, NJ Advance Media reported.

It was not immediately clear what charges he was facing. Further details of the incident were not available.

“Kudos to the JCPD and all officers involved for their exploits and for bringing this dangerous situation to an end,” the Hudson County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
