Another quiet September weekend, another victory for Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings.

With few new competitions, the Disney / Marvel blockbuster easily finished atop the box office for a third consecutive weekend, grossing around $ 21.7 million in its third frame. It counts as the third most important weekend among pandemic era exits – beating hands down A Quiet Place, Part II$ 12 million in June – and the second third all-time weekend in September, exceeding It: chapter two‘s $ 17M as of 2019 (the first This still holds the record with a third weekend of $ 29.8 million in 2017). With $ 176.89 million domestically, it is now the second highest grossing film since the start of the pandemic in North America, just behind Marvel stablemate Black Widow ($ 183.38), which it should easily pass by next weekend.

Shang-ChiPositive word-of-mouth is an undeniable factor in its strong second and third weekend takes, as is the film’s premium screen count, which has remained largely untouched over the weekend given the shortage of new successful competitions. Speaking of which, the weekend’s two wide-spread newcomers – Warner Bros. ‘ crying macho and Open Road’s Copshop – failed to attract much theatrical audience in their first images.

In fact, second place this weekend was a long-standing legacy free guy, which fell just 7% to an estimated $ 5.2 million in its sixth weekend release. The Ryan Reynolds action comedy total now stands at $ 108.6 million.

crying macho, 91-year-old Clint Eastwood’s latest big-screen vehicle, debuted in third place with a whopping $ 4.52 million from 3,967 locations, thanks in part to Warner Bros. decision to release the movie day and date on HBO Max. The title’s disappointing 52% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes was also a factor in the disappointing opening, which is just below the actor-writer-director’s previous effort, 2019. Richard jewell. This film opened at $ 4.7 million and topped just $ 22.35 million nationally, albeit with an exclusive theatrical release. Cry Macho performed particularly well in the West and South, the studio reports.

Universal fellow – who made his VOD debut this weekend – finished in fourth place with an estimated $ 3.5 million in his fourth frame for a total of $ 53.1 million to date.

After opening with a disappointing $ 5.43 million last weekend, Warner Bros. ‘ Smart fell 51% to about $ 2.68 million in fifth place in its second year. That brings the total for James Wan’s horror film, which debuted day and date on HBO Max, to $ 9.8 million after 10 days of release.

The other weekend release is Gerard Butler’s action flick Copshop, grossed around $ 2.31 million on 3,005 screens, good for sixth place. The Joe Carnahan-directed film received an exclusive theatrical release and even garnered decent reviews, but it clearly didn’t connect with its (male) target audience, which currently has a plethora of options at the multiplex, including understood Shang-Chi, the free man, and crying macho.

from disney Jungle cruise took seventh place in its eighth weekend release with $ 2.09 million (down just 10% from last weekend), bringing its total to $ 112.58 million. In eighth, Paw Patrol: The Movie grossed around $ 1.75 million in its fifth weekend release for a total of $ 37.14 million.

Searchlight Pictures debuted in ninth place Tammy Faye’s eyes, which opened for $ 675,000 in 450 theaters. It’s a rather weak start for the Oscar-winning film, which stars Jessica Chastain in the title role. Reviews for the biopic were mostly positive, though perhaps not good enough to break through with an arthouse-loving audience. It is expanding to over 1,000 cinemas next weekend.

Don’t breathe 2 topped the top 10 with around $ 665,000 in its fifth weekend, bringing the horror sequel’s total to $ 31.34 million.

ABROAD

Warner Bros. ‘ Dune got off to a good start in 24 foreign markets this weekend, including $ 7.6 million in Russia, $ 7.5 million in France, $ 4.9 million in Germany, $ 2.2 million in Italy and $ 2 million in Spain. The film has done particularly strong business on IMAX screens, where it grossed around $ 3.6 million from just 142 locations, giving it a scorching average of $ 25,000 per screen (in Denmark, Norway and Germany). Sweden, the studio reports the film topped $ 80k per screen in IMAX format). IMAX is sort of a marketing hook for the tent pole directed by Dennis Villenueve, which was filmed for the format with over an hour of extended aspect ratio exclusive to IMAX. The sci-fi adaptation opens in North America on October 22.
