BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Michelle Preissler looks through photos of treasured memories of her husband Darryl. The 63-year-old Pasadena man died in May from COVID-19.
“There are no more photos to come. That’s all. This is the hardest part, ”she said through tears.

Michelle was vaccinated but not her husband. She thinks he may have caught the virus from a wedding and she just wishes he got the shot before it’s too late.
“And now I am crying for something that could have been avoided if he had been vaccinated,” she said.

Health officials across the state are concerned about the increase in the dangerous and more contagious Delta variant, which now accounts for nearly half of Maryland’s new cases.

“There are people who thought that the disease was going to go away and that everything would be fine, but clearly with the Delta variant and other variants present, it’s a clear message that it is not going to go away, and the vaccine is really a necessity, ”said Jon Weinstein of the Maryland Department of Health.

WJZ had rare access to the Elijah Cummings courthouse, formerly Courthouse East in downtown Baltimore, where the state, city and the justice system teamed up to host a weekday vaccination clinic with the first vaccines available until August 13.
“There is no better way to serve our citizens than to bring the vaccination centers here to court,” Chief Justice Audrey Carrión of the Baltimore Circuit Court told the WJZ investigator, Mike Hellgren. “They don’t need to be in court for just any type of business. They could just walk down Calvert Street and come in.
The Vaccination Clinic is located on the 6th Floor of the Cummings Courthouse Monday through Friday 9 am to 4:30 pm A second vaccine clinic will be held in the same room from August 16 to September 10.

Maryland has seen the number of cases double over the past week, but they remain relatively low thanks to the state ranking sixth in the country in the number of people vaccinated.
Gov. Larry Hogan tweeted Monday that 98% of today’s new cases were unvaccinated.
All of the deaths in the past month in Maryland are among those that have not been vaccinated.
