When it is adopted, New Mexico will join 17 other states and the District of Columbia to offer same-day voter registration.

State Secretary of New Mexico, Maggie Toulouse Oliver (D), had advocated for this change, as a means of increasing voter turnout.

A number of Democratic lawmakers in the county lobbied to expand voter access, including by proposing to legislate to adopt a same day vote registration system.
