Meteorologist Jym Ganahl hopes to return to WSYX-TV (Channel 6) next week after being hospitalized Thursday for atrial fibrillation.
Ganahl was admitted to the OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital after several weeks of respiratory pain and fatigue, he said. Aged 70, he suffers from congestive heart failure and said that he thought it was causing him symptoms.
"I was surprised that it was a lie – it was a first time for me," he said Friday during a phone interview from the hospital.
Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots, strokes, or other heart problems. Ganahl said the doctors had regained the rhythm of his heart and that he was taking medication to prevent clot formation.
"Things are going well," he said. "I'll be back to work, I'm sure, next week."
Ganahl was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2013, while he had spent three weeks in intensive care. He was a meteorologist for WCMH-TV (channel 4) from 1979 to retirement in 2016.
In 2017, he joined WSYX part-time. He makes forecasts for the noon news on weekdays and occasionally fills out other shows.
