New Nintendo Switch with 7-inch OLED display coming this year, report says

Nintendo plans to release an improved model of the Switch this year with an OLED display, according to a new report in Bloomberg. The report says Samsung Display is supplying the screen, which will be a 7-inch 720p rigid OLED panel due to go into mass production in June.

The current Switch has a 6.2-inch 720p LCD panel, while the Switch Lite’s display is a 5.5-inch 720p LCD. Many Switch games struggle to reach native resolution in portable mode, so the lack of a resolution upgrade isn’t much of a surprise. The Bloomberg report notes, however, that the new Switch model will be capable of 4K graphics when connected to a TV, so the decision to stick to 720p in portable mode could also be to preserve the lifespan of the device. battery.

The report doesn’t indicate a possible release date for the new Switch, but Bloomberg sources say it will arrive in time for the holidays and screens will start shipping to assemblers around July. The initial monthly target would be “just under a million units”; if the final holiday season is anything to go by, Nintendo will want to make as many consoles as possible.
