Experts are expressing optimism that the body offers long-lasting immunity to COVID-19 for those who have recovered from even a mild case following a series of new studies.

Scientists recently observed “encouraging signs of strong and long-lasting immunity” to COVID-19, including in those with only mild symptoms of the coronavirus, in the form of virus-fighting antibodies and B cells and T who recognize it, “seem to persist for months after the infections resolve,” The New York Times reports.

“This is exactly what you are hoping for,” said University of Washington immunologist Marion Pepper, author of one of the recent studies. Time. “All the pieces are there to have a fully protective immune response.”

Particularly encouraging, the Time explains, is evidence of immunity in patients who have just had mild symptoms, suggesting, as University of California immunologist Smita Iyer explained, that “you can still get long-lasting immunity without suffer the consequences of infection. ” Emory University immunologist Eun-Hyung Lee also told the Time, “Yes, you are developing immunity against this virus, and good immunity against this virus. That’s the message we want to get across.”

At the same time, the Time notes that it’s still not clear how long immune responses might last, and recent studies “don’t show protection in action.” Read more on The New York Times.
