SARS-CoV-2 does not originate in a cave in the Chinese province of Yunnan, says a group of French scientists. Last year, a group of Indian researchers published an article in which they suggested that Mojiang Cave could be the birthplace of the new coronavirus, as a virus similar to SARS-CoV-2 was discovered in Mojiang in 2012. At the time, six miners contracted a serious respiratory illness after cleaning the cave of bat droppings in order to extract copper. The men were between 30 and 60 years old and three of them died of the disease. Subsequent examination revealed that the miners were infected with a coronavirus, named RaTG13. Samples of the virus were collected by the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Indian scientists have suggested that RaTG13 is a close relative of SARS-CoV-2. Their French colleagues, however, affirmed the opposite. According to the preliminary results of their study, which will be published next year, individuals infected with RaTG13 had very different symptoms from those displayed by COVID-19 patients. They also wondered why the doctors and people the Chinese miners were in close contact with didn’t get sick. The retrospective study of the medical reports of the miners showed that, unlike the COVID-19 patients, they had coughed up blood and mucus. CT scans showed the miners did not have the lung scars seen in many COVID-19 hospital patients. A laboratory leak ruled out? animal (probably a pangolin), before infecting humans. However, as the pandemic progressed, another theory emerged – that the outbreak started due to a laboratory leak in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the first cases of the disease were reported, or that the disease was of human origin. Both hypotheses have been dismissed as a savage conspiracy theory, with the World Health Organization declaring that it is “extremely unlikely” that COVID-19 is of human origin. Yet since the spring there has been a change in attitude towards the lab leak scenario, which began after the Wall Street Journal wrote, citing previously undisclosed documents written by the U.S. intelligence community, that three employees of the Wuhan Institute of Virology requested medical attention for a disease similar to COVID-19, three weeks before Chinese authorities reported the first case of COVID. A subsequent investigation by the Biden administration resulted in an inconclusive report, with experts divided over whether the pandemic started due to an overflow of nature or was disclosed by accident. The investigation, however, said the disease was not developed as a biological weapon. French scientists argue that the results of their study refute previous claims about the lab leak. However, the study has been questioned by other scientists. Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist at the University of Warwick, told the Daily Mail that the theory of laboratory leaks “cannot be ruled out”. Professor David Livermore, a microbiologist at the University of East Anglia, said that although he believes the theory of laboratory leaks is unlikely to cause the virus, there are “remarkable coincidences”.
