The coronavirus pandemic has dominated the public health conversation since it emerged over a year ago, but it’s not the only deadly threat Americans face.
The opioid epidemic accelerated early last year and caused 81,000 drug overdose deaths in the 12 months ending May 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the highest ever recorded at this time.

“The disruption of daily life from the COVID-19 pandemic has hit people with substance use disorders hard,” CDC Director Robert Redfield said a December outing. “As we continue to fight to end this pandemic, it is important not to lose sight of the different groups who are affected in other ways. Data on the scope and toll of the epidemic is limited, but 37 of 38 U.S. jurisdictions with synthetic opioid data have reported an increase in synthetic opioid-related overdose deaths, the CDC reported, and 18 of between them have seen deaths increase by more than half. The state, which has a population of over 1.7 million, has reported more than 2,000 people with illicit substance use disorders, 337 drug-related arrests and more than 61 in 100 overdose deaths 000.
Delaware, Tennessee, Louisiana and Maryland followed, rounding out the top five states affected by the outbreak. Kansas, meanwhile, was the least affected, and while more than 1,800 out of 100,000 residents were diagnosed with an illicit substance use disorder, drug-related arrests were down to around 76. while overdose deaths were just under 14.
