New vaccinations overtake completed vaccinations

MADISON, Wisconsin (WBAY) – As of the third day of this week, more people received their first “arm injection” of a COVID-19 vaccine than those receiving their last injection.

Vaccinators reported that 4,432 more people in Wisconsin received a vaccine compared to 3,574 who completed their vaccination schedule (meaning they received one dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine or a second dose of vaccine. Pfizer or Moderna).

The State Department of Health Services (DHS) reports that 49% of Wisconsin’s population is now fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus, or 2,852,120 people, of which 59.6% are adults. That’s about 51.4% of Wisconsinians who have received at least one dose of the vaccine, including 59.6% of adults.

Wisconsin is approaching the mark of 3 million people who are “shot in the arm.” If current trends hold true, we should take this step early next week.

Seventeen of the 19 counties in the WBAY observation area that we monitor have seen an increase in their population getting vaccinated, completing vaccinations, or both. The counties of Kewaunee and Sheboygan were the exceptions. Green Lake, Menominee, Waupaca and Winnebago counties registered the largest gains since Thursday’s report.

The increase in the number of people getting vaccinated coincides with an increase in the number of people testing positive for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

DHS reports that Wisconsin has recorded an average of 274 new cases of coronavirus each day over the past 7 days. Compare that to an average of 149 cases last Friday and 91 cases the week before. Testing has identified 448 new cases since the last report. This helped push the average positivity rate to 3.3% – three tenths of a percent higher than Thursday. Last year, health officials often cited 3% as the extent to which the spread of the virus is considered managed, and they are concerned about the direction in which it is moving.

Five more deaths from COVID-19 bring the toll to 7,398 since March 2020. State says 3 of them have occurred in the past month, but the state continues to average 1 death per day . The death rate is still 1.20% of all cases. None of the five deaths were in the WBAY observation area.

Thirty-seven other people have been hospitalized for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. This corresponds to our calculated average of 35 admissions per day. Including discharges and deaths, there are overall 7 more COVID-19 patients in intensive care and 5 more people hospitalized for COVID-19 care, compared to Thursday. The Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) reports that 156 people are currently hospitalized in the state, including 42 in intensive care.

Hospitals in the North East health region treat 12 people, 4 of whom are in intensive care. This is one more patient in intensive care than the day before, but overall the same number of patients. Fox Valley area hospitals reported no change in numbers on Friday, with 9 COVID-19 patients, none in intensive care.

In a health briefing Thursday afternoon, communicable disease specialist Dr Ryan Westergaard said “98.4% of cases occur in people who are not fully vaccinated.” As of January, the state had 145,759 confirmed and probable cases among those who were not fully vaccinated, compared with 2,390 confirmed or probable so-called “revolutionary” cases among those fully vaccinated. Westergaard couldn’t say how many people hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment were not fully vaccinated – or vaccinated at all – but he expected that percentage to be even higher than 98.4%, because COVID-19 vaccines reduce the severity of the virus and most “breakthrough” cases that tested positive were asymptomatic.

DHS Secretary Julie Willems Van Dijk said: “There isn’t a county in Wisconsin that is properly vaccinated.” A interactive map with distribution of vaccinations by municipality and postal code can be found on the DHS website.

** Cases and deaths are from state COVID-19 reports, which may differ from local health department numbers. The Wisconsin DHS reports cases of all health departments within a county, including tribal, municipal, and county health departments; county websites cannot. Additionally, public health departments update their data at different times, while DHS freezes the numbers it receives at the same time each day to compile the afternoon report.
