BUFFALO, NY – Police were investigating on Friday what caused a high-speed van to crash into a monument outside Buffalo City Hall, killing a passenger and seriously injuring the driver on Thanksgiving.
Police identified the deceased woman as Angel Marie Cobb, 34, of Buffalo. The 40-year-old driver remained hospitalized. His name has not been released.
Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo told reporters the vehicle reached “extreme speed” before crashing into the marble obelisk around 7:30 am Thursday.
The Buffalo News reported that the Toyota Sienna crashed through two marble poles surrounding the site, then struck the 96-foot-high monument in honor of President William McKinley, who was assassinated in a 1901 visit to western New York City.
The monument suffered no apparent structural damage, said Rinaldo, but the facade was heavily damaged.
