– More than 100 people packed pews at a Texas funeral home this month to honor Nancy Kaddatz. So many people loved her mother, said Delynda Cruz. Now 42 of those people have tested positive for the coronavirus, including Cruz. The youngest patient is 3 years old and the oldest 90 years old, KDFW reports. “We really want others to learn from what we didn’t know was wrong,” said Cruz. Most people wore masks for domestic service, she said, but social distancing was not followed. She is troubled that the service has turned into a mass-market event: “It was scary knowing that I could have been the one who gave my 90-year-old auntie,” said Cruz. “Either I could have been the one who gave the 3 year old, or I could have been the one who gave my cousin who is fighting for his life.

The state health department is conducting contact tracing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the funeral must be reconsidered during the pandemic. Hillsboro Funeral Home, which is supposed to be operating at 75% of capacity, would not comment. “In some situations, many people have fallen ill with COVID-19 after attending a funeral service,” the CDC advises. Texas has reported more than 1.2 million coronavirus cases and more than 21,630 deaths, according to Fox News. Cruz developed symptoms two days after the November 8 service. “I had chills Tuesday night,” she said, “and then Wednesday morning I had a little fever. Cruz said she was still having trouble with basic chores around the house. (Read more stories about coronaviruses.)
