ALBANY, NY (AP) – New York is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases as vaccination rates slowly rise, according to the latest state data released on Saturday.
About 525 people every day have tested positive for COVID-19 in New York City for seven days through Friday.
That’s against 369 people – an increase of 42% – for the previous week.
It’s unclear why more people in New York City are testing positive, at a time when fewer people are testing.
The state’s health ministry says a higher percentage of cases are linked to more contagious variants. It encourages more people to get vaccinated.
Much of the increase in positives is New York City, although cases are also increasing in parts of Long Island.
Meanwhile, hospitalizations are flattening: Hospitals reported 342 COVID-19 patients on Friday, up from 340 patients last Friday.
About 55% of the 20 million New Yorkers are fully immunized. This represents an increase of almost 48% as of June 6.
Vaccination rates are lowest in parts of western and central New York City: about a third of Allegany County residents are fully vaccinated.
Rates are also lower in parts of New York City: 43% of Bronx residents and 45.5% of Brooklyn residents are fully vaccinated.
