New York City Health Committee Chairman Mark D. Levine applauded a large crowd of New Yorkers on Saturday celebrating Joe Biden’s presidential victory, but a day later he warned the city was in the midst of a “2nd wave” of the coronavirus pandemic with cases and hospitalizations piling up.
“An emotional crowd in Times Square watching @jbiden and @KamalaHarris make history as pres and vice president-elect,” Levine tweeted on Saturday night. “Chants of ‘USA! UNITED STATES!'”
The tweet included a video of New Yorkers standing side-by-side, many without a mask, and just about everyone breaking social distancing rules.
But less than 24 hours later, Levine’s festive tone had dramatically changed as he warned that New York City was not approaching or risking a second wave of coronavirus but was in the middle of one.

It is still a deadly and debilitating virus. It’s time for New York to rally again.

New York was one of many large metropolitan cities across the country where large crowds of people, in obvious violation of safety regulations, celebrated Biden’s victory. Many city leaders who told residents to exercise caution this year were visibly silent on health issues as they applauded the celebrations.
