Parents of unvaccinated children in New York were forced to rethink their decision to circumvent public health practices this week when a judge banned 50 children from attending Green Meadow School Waldorf. The private school is located in Rockland County, New York, where CBS News reports have already counted 146 confirmed cases of measles this year alone.
The ruling, which was issued by a federal judge, will prevent 50 students from going to school for at least three weeks. The decision dealt with an injunction filed by several parents of unvaccinated children who wanted their children to be allowed to return to school. Needless to say, things did not go as planned.
"The plaintiffs have not shown that the public interest was in favor of an injunction," US District Court Judge Vincent Briccetti said in his explanation of the decision.
Parents – who did not provide their children with the measles vaccine that prevents the disease in 97% of people – are not satisfied with the judge's decision.
"Preventing my child from being with his class, his teacher, his class, has had a significant social and psychological impact," said one parent. Newspaper News. "It's confusing, given his young age, why he's not allowed on his campus."
Several states allow parents to choose not to be vaccinated on the basis of different beliefs, but the debate over whether measles vaccine is effective has been settled for a long time. It works, and at one point measles has been declared totally eradicated in the United States.
Unfortunately, a flawed "study" that has long been discussed and retracted sparked a debate over whether the vaccine was responsible for autism, among other things. Subsequent research has shown that these notions are false and, even if there is a slight chance that a person may have a negative reaction to any type of vaccine, most of the anti-vaxxer arguments are based on erroneous or non-existent scientific data.
In the future, it will not be surprising to see more decisions like that of New York, while public health officials and authorities are doing everything they can to fight the spread of the disease. 39, a disease that had been eliminated in the country.
