New York magazine firing 32 people

New York magazine's parent company is laying off 32 full-time, freelance employees as part of its plan to restructure the publication, according to a note on Monday from the company's general manager.

The memo, obtained by CNN Business, was sent by Pam Wasserstein, CEO of New York Media. The layoffs will mainly have an impact on traffic, production, video and audience development.

Sixteen of those laid off are full-time employees and 16 are freelance or part-time.

The company said the move was part of a necessary "restructuring".

"As part of our long-term planning process, we thoroughly examined our existing structure and roles to better organize our resources according to our business strategy," wrote Wasserstein. "I think this restructuring is necessary for us on as firm a basis as possible as an independent company, although it does not make it any less painful today."

In a statement, New York Media stressed the need to give priority to strengthening its digital subscription activities.

"In some cases, the changes we make reflect the need to refocus on our digital subscription business; in others, they reflect a late integration of print and digital teams, "said the company in its statement.

"In no way do they judge the quality of the work produced by our departing colleagues, and we sincerely thank them for their contributions here," he adds. "The restructuring reflects the difficult decisions made by our CEO and our management team in recent months to focus our efforts on the most promising prospects for future growth."

The media sector has seen significant redundancies in recent years, including Buzzfeed, Gannett and HuffPost. According to a Pew Research analysis published in 2018, more than half of the largest US newspapers have fired employees since January 2017. Pew also found that nine of the 16 newspapers whose circulation was greater than or equal to 250,000, or 56% , had layoffs during the period 2017-2018.
