New York Rangers’ final protected roster for Seattle expansion is expected to include Barclay Goodrow

All teams submitted their protected lists to the Seattle Kraken at 5 p.m. ET. This morning, around 10 a.m., those lists will be sent out to all teams and we should know who the New York Rangers have chosen to protect.

Chris Drury has acquired the rights to Barclay Goodrow which will be a UFA on July 28. He also dispatched Brett Howden; which explains the resignation of Julien Gauthier. Having signed Howden or Gauthier allowed them to meet the demands of exposing two forwards under contract for next season if they wanted to protect Colin Blackwell or Kevin Rooney.

However; it was probably an insurance policy before buying Goodrow.

Predict Protected Ranger List

All teams must protect any player with an NMC. When it comes to free agents; they can be protected even if they do not have a contract. This prevents the Seattle Kraken from having an exclusive trading window before free agency on July 28.

Protect Barclay Goodrow

The Rangers are already in discussions with Barclay Goodrow about a new contract with Dave Pagnotta. This is a good sign that Drury may want to continue with their new acquisition and deal with him before the free agency opens.

That’s why I think he will be protected. Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reported that several teams were ready to give Goodrow, 28, up to six years on the open market. That’s not to say that’s what he’ll get from the Rangers, but it does indicate how his worth is viewed.

I doubt the Rangers would want to risk Seattle to jack the price up unnecessarily. Also, why trade early trading rights if you are going to allow another team to do it? That’s why he’s on my list.
